The Rookie Card phenomena began in the early 1980s and has become an integral part of the sports card hobby and industry. When Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters, suddenly collectors discovered his 1996 Sports Illustrated for Kids Rookie Card, and pretty soon, the chase was on for golf, and then every individual and team sport Rookie Cards.
